The Dandy Lion Market, and something different for January

The Festive Season dust is just settling a bit, and I've now got to get into gear to fill and promote the next Dandy Lion Market. As January can be a quiet month, both for traders and customers, I thought I'd do something a bit different. First, moving it forward to the 2nd Saturday, thereby avoiding the end of the school holidays, when many are still away. Also, as I have had a hectic and slightly traumatic few weeks, what with a small fire, having to clean and clear out stuff, I thought others might be in the mood to do the same (not have a small fire!)  So, I've dubbed the Jan Dandy as a Vintage and Rummage Sale, cuz everyone loves a bargain and a good rummage. I've been calling out for traders who want to shift some cupboard and closet clobber, end of line hand mades, and discount vintage wares. Should be great fun!

Hope to see some of you there! And anyone with items described they would like to sell, do get in touch @ lwrjam@yahoo.com, £15 for a standard pitch.

Blue Skies and discovering Polyvore!

I have just discovered a new platform for indulging my love of curating, of fashion and of interiors. A bit like grown up paper dolls. It is fun.
Below is my first interior collage. These days I seem to lean towards primary colours mixed with neutrals, or monochrome. Shades of blue feature in this one, with a bright sun yellow throw rug. Brown brings it down to earth and gold adds a bit of glam. This is a chic and modern room, with a whimsical twist and a dollop of baroque.

Wonderful press release for Artists Who...from Wall Street Internatinal

My latest collaborative event with the collective, Artists Who...has been given a fabulous press release from Wall Street International!
Wall Street International Magazine - Artists Who [Arts, United Kingdom]

Artists Who

28 November - 3 December 2013 at Vibe Gallery, London.

Artists Who
Vivienne Hollis, Detail from There is Another World
‘Artists Who…’ are a collective of seven diverse London based artists that formed in January 2013 to exhibit their work together as a means to create alternative channels to artistic expression. Their unique fusion of contrasting influences, styles and media result in a compelling showcase of modern art.
The new collective is launching a rolling tour of distinctive artwork at exhibitions across the capital and beyond starting with: “Series Zero” by 'Artists Who...'. Curated by Gabriel Parfitt
Artists Involved:
Vivienne Hollis: With a dazzling abundance of microscopic patterned detail, Vivienne's paintings reveal a multitude of concentric circles. Each circle contains a nucleus; a clue about the story.
Zoë Landau Konson: Growing up in a creative refugee family, Zoë's work is generated by a fascination with cultural memory and hereditary narrative. With poetic execution, Zoë's sculptures, made from crochet, hair or textiles communicate the unspoken; the stories that have yet to be told.
Leslie Wilson Rutterford: Born in Denver, Colorado to artist parents, Leslie emigrated to London in 1981. Enthused by her multifarious interests, observations and experiences, Leslie explores personal and shared histories through embroidered textiles and bookworks.
Tony Scrivener: The beauty of London, its inhabitants past and present, fuel the basis of Tony's work. Through his paintings he brings to life the faded, over-looked and unknown aspects of London, with a need to resurrect.
Helena Carrizosa: Helena is a Colombian born conceptual fashion designer and artist. With eloquence and enquiry, Helena explores the deeper facets of individuality through her uniquely tailored garments, paintings and drawings.
Beverley Isaacs: Beverley's works represent her curiosity and desire to spontaneously capture movement, sentiment and the energy of the subject or objects found. She has experimented with, and studied various mediums including animation, assemblage, painting, drawing and photography.
Michael Young: Media veteran explores 21st Century digital possibilities of circumstance and moments captured on film and video, around the role of photography in the search for identity.

New profile and account with 'We Are Pop Up'

I just created a new profile for 'We Are Pop Up' in the hopes of having one soon! There's a new space in Camden which would be great to join.

It's really difficult selecting photos for a pop up, as all I've really done before are markets and fairs. But here are a few:

Vintage buttons zip bracelets. (Jennie McLetchie)

Vintage 50's pin up badges.

'Corset' embroideries (original from 'Stitched Up' series of artworks.

Applique wall art hoops.

Nicole modelling a selection of USA vintage fashion. Shoot held in Oak Meadow, Saratoga, California August 2013.

A detail from my pitch at 'A Glamorous Affair' vintage and handmade fair held at The Library pub in islington.

Deer and Roses transfer on vintage fabric cushion.

Range of Valentine cards designed and printed by me.

Most recent series of 'Found & Bound' mini books, using a found object, found quote and junk materials.

It would be really lovely to get something more permanent set up, so people can know to find me at a certain place every day. I could 'go out to' work more when others do, and not just at weekends. It would also alleviate a certain amount of hoiking stuff around, setting up and packing up!
Wish me luck. x

Summer/Autumn Update

I am well overdue for a new post on my blog. So much has been going on it is untrue. Without even going into my month long stay in Calif to see family and friends, my Dandy Lion Market has kept me well busy. I was prompted to update you all when uploading this gorgeous surface designer, Ursula O'Connor's wares. Surely I've seen her products in Paperchase, and if not, why not? Feast your eyes on this collection of beauties.

The September 'Back to School' edition of the Dandy was slightly undermined by Kentish Town Road works, causing a reduction in road and foot traffic. So unfair with all the work that goes into each event by me and the traders. As always, it was an episode not to be missed, as each one is different and special. Here's a few highlights!

Don't Look Now

It's always nice when friends visit!

The rest of September saw me try 2 different markets, Portabello Rocks and The Vintage Home Show London. Katie Ingham, of I Love Markets, organised this as the first of a series of Pop-Ups placed along the annex road of Portobello Road Market. I've never done a famous street market before. Aidan helped me set up in a Gazebo pitch which was really crucial for Vintage Fashion and the pretty wet day that ensued. It was really fun, though and another opportunity to show my newly acquired USA collection of Vintage clothing, shoes, jewellery and collectibles. I also got to install the fab patched drape cover I put together a few years ago.

And the lovely coffee van at Portobello Green.

I had a great day sales wise, and enjoyed being placed between Katie and her partner on one side, who are expecting their first baby any day now, and an old friend Tania on the other side. Some very stylish and cool visitors came and visited my little boutique. It was a long day and a wet day, but I'm glad I tried it. I have wimped out of doing anymore until the weather picks up again next spring. I'm just not cut out for standing all day on cold and damp cobblestone!

Vintage fashion has become my passion, and it usually does best with sales, but since discovering Judy's Vintage Furniture Flea, and the quite new Vintage Home Show London, I have found a good platform for selling my bric-a-brac. They are reasonably priced considering the amount of publicity they get, followers they have and space you get. The entry price was a bit steep at £5 for trade, and £4 for general public. Since the Flea was last spring, I won't go back that far in time, and will instead share a bit about the Home Show. It was well organised, and set in the stunning Chiswick Town Hall, opposite Turnham Green, in West London. Nice and warm and dry, with good lighting and a nice placement in front of the stage, I was in my element. There was a glut of mid-century modern, which I love, but in my mind isn't everyone's cup of tea, so I was glad I had something different to offer. I didn't do too badly, which after speaking to many other traders wasn't the general experience. A good few said they wouldn't do it again, but I will!

Back to the present and the up and coming Dandy, it has been a tricky month to fill which seems to be typical for this month. But, it's on with the show whatever happens! Hope to see you there!
